I DIDN'T TALK ALL DAY (ON PURPOSE)
Today, I vocally rested.
What's that? I didn't speak. For the WHOLE day.
Okay, fine. There were a couple of mess-ups where I forgot I wasn't allowed to talk and a word or two just... fell out of my face. But for the most part? I kept my promise to myself. Gold star. Silent gold star.
WHY THO
So my vocal folds, my intrinsic laryngeal muscles, and my extrinsic neck muscles can take a breather. A weight trainer takes rest days. Singers do too. Muscles and ligaments need a minute to chill out, and so does the whole squishy instrument in my throat.
This wasn't my first rodeo. But my body was sending me memos:
SYMPTOMS ON FILE:
- Pulling and tension in my neck
- Pain in my throat
- Vocal “softness” and “blurring” (the WORST one)
Instead of my normal clarity, it sounded like something was sitting on my vocal folds and making everything fuzzy. Like singing through a sweater. A wet sweater. A wet sweater someone left in the dryer and then forgot about for three days.
Time for a rest, indeed.
WHAT I LEARNED
For some weird reason, I was way more creative. I could focus. I could zone in. My thoughts got... simpler. Quieter, even (ha). Honestly? I'll take that trade, as long as it never has to last longer than a day.
My partner had a great time “communicating” with me and then guessing my answers, like a very low-stakes game of charades where every round was about dinner. And it actually made us sweeter with each other. Who knew silence could be so flirty?
With nothing else to do, I worked on website stuff and drew up funny designs. Super chill. Super productive.
